How to Store your Jewelry

How to Store Jewelry

Most damage to fine jewelry does not happen while you are wearing it. It happens in the drawer. A diamond ring tossed in with your other pieces can scratch every one of them, and a necklace left loose turns into a knot that takes twenty minutes to undo.

The good news is that good storage is simple. Here is how to keep your rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets protected, organized, and ready to wear, at home and on the go.

Every Majestic Piece Comes Boxed

Every piece you buy from us comes in its own Majestic box or pouch, whether you pick it up at the store or we ship it to you.

Keep it. That box is the safest home your piece can have. It keeps the piece separate from the rest of your jewelry, so nothing scratches it and nothing tangles, and it keeps out the dust and moisture that dull the shine.

Our Jewelry Storing Tips

Whether a piece is gold, platinum, diamonds, or colored gemstones, the same three rules keep it looking its best:

  1. Keep pieces apart. Diamonds are the hardest material there is, so they scratch gold, platinum, other gemstones, and even other diamonds. Give every piece its own pouch or compartment.
  2. Line it with fabric. A soft, fabric-lined box or pouch protects the polish on your metal far better than a bare drawer or a dish.
  3. Keep it cool, dark, and dry. Store your jewelry away from direct sunlight, heat, and bathroom humidity.

Jewelry Storage Ideas

Whether your jewelry box needs a reset or you are starting fresh, these simple ideas make a big difference:

• Necklaces: fasten the clasp and hang them, or lay each one flat in its own compartment so the chains never knot.

• Earrings: always store them in pairs, with the backs on, so one never goes missing.

• Rings: use a ring roll or slotted tray so stones do not rub against each other.

• Bracelets: lay tennis bracelets flat and closed to protect the links and clasp.

• Everyday vs. special occasion: keep the pieces you wear daily in easy reach and the rest tucked away in their boxes.

• Near the sink: keep a small dish by the sink for rings you take off to wash your hands, never the edge of the counter.

Clean It Before You Put It Away

Lotion, perfume, and the oils from your skin keep working on your jewelry after you take it off. A quick wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth before a piece goes back in its box keeps it bright for the next time you wear it.

FAQs About Storing Jewelry

How do I keep my jewelry from tarnishing or dulling?

Store each piece in a closed, fabric-lined box or pouch, away from humidity, and put your jewelry on after lotion, perfume, and hairspray. Pure gold does not tarnish, but everyday buildup can make it look dull, and a quick wipe with a soft cloth before you put it away keeps the shine.

How should I store diamond jewelry?

On its own. Diamonds can scratch every other piece in your collection, including other diamonds, so give each diamond piece its own pouch or compartment. Your original Majestic box is perfect for this.

How do I store colored gemstones like emeralds?

Rubies and sapphires are very hard and store just like diamonds. Emeralds are softer and more delicate, so keep them in their own pouch, away from heat and direct sunlight, and never loose in a drawer with other pieces.

How should I pack jewelry for travel?

Use a small travel case or a roll with separate pockets, and pack it in your carry-on, never in checked luggage. Thread fine chains through a straw or fasten them flat so they do not knot, and only bring the pieces you plan to wear.

How do I clean jewelry before storing it?

A soft, lint-free cloth is all you need day to day. For a deeper clean, see our How to Clean Jewelry guide, or stop by the store and we will clean it for you.
